If it's stubborn coming apart, you can get a wrench on the clamping bar adjustment nut, loosen it, and relieve some of the clampage.
that would be the case if this "jamming" was to get the final clamping mechanism to close, not if it just doesn't drop onto the ball. I "assume" that the clamping mechanism has been loosened however.
