"Hitch weight"

Hi all.
When I read TT spec listings some will give the hitch/tongue weight along with the dry weight and GVWR. Can anyone specify if the hitch weight listing would include the weight of LP?

that's a very minimum. depending on configuration, add 1 or 2 batteries (60-120lbs) and between 30 and 60 lbs for propane. Then the stuff you put in the trailer.

In our case our 795lb empty tongue weight, verified with a sherline scale climbs to 1250lbs with the trailer loaded and no water or 1450lbs with a full fresh and empty black/grey tanks. Empty fresh and full black/grey pushs it even higher. I'd recomend expecting tongue weight to increase 50-100%.

Or, assume that the loaded tongue weight will be around 15% of the GVWR, even if you don't load it to GVWR and form your decision around WD hitch, reciever, tow vehicle around that number.

and correct, most mfg spec tongue weight with propane tanks installed but empty and no batteries. Unfortunetly, propane and batteries add a reasonable amount of weight and are located close enough to the ball that virtually all the added weight transfers to the tongue.

I've helped quite a few folks set up hitches and I've yet to come across a case where someone overestimated their tongue weight.

  • It does not, at least on any manufacturer I know of. When selling a trailer I add the weight of 1 or 2 batteries (depending on how its sold) and propane to the customers weight sheet.

    Happy trails.
  • No....your dry weight does not include propane. Then again it would depend on the mfg if they include it or not.

Either way...the weight of the LP tanks should not be a concern, that small amount of weight is not a huge difference. If it is, you are likely way too heavy.
  • I would have to say no. usually the hitch weight you see in the brouche are dry weights. And the dry weights don't include water batires are poprane.
