As a chemist let me point out that Napthalene is a white solid not a solvent
yes in some of its uses, but as for the use we're discussing, hydrogenated Naphthalenes... Tetrahydronaphthalene and Decahydronaphthalene are used as "low-volatility" Solvents.
molten naphthalene provides an excellent solubilizing medium for poorly soluble aromatic compounds... it is more efficient than other high-boiling solvents.
Napahthalene has several uses of course as you states "mothballs" or fumigant... chemical reaction solvent... wetting agent/surfactant... chemical intermediate...
