How much better for dual over single axle?

I know the weight will be higher, hence the dual axle but I keep hearing they will tow much better. How much better? We tow a pup up and it tows fine BECUASE of the low profile. Is a single axle full height really going to be a chore? (we currently use a sway bar on the pup)
  • Directional stability is the argument for dual axles. Think about it: to deviate from straight-ahead, one of the axles has to be dragged sideways (actually, one has to crab left while the other crabs right, but the energy required is the same). This helps greatly with reducing sway. And bad as sway is with a 1500 lb trailer, it's much much worse the heavier the trailer is.
  • On the unlucky side of things, if you by chance get a flat at least you have one tire on one side still holding the TT up till you can get off the road. A blowout on a single axle TT would not be fun.

If both trailer chassis were exactly the same, I'd rather have dual axles under it. IMO, dual axles is much better.
  • > Dual Axle provides better stopping (4 brakes on the TT).
    > Backing up is more predictable. It takes the dual axle longer to react.
    > Weight can be a factor but depending upon your tow vehicle, it may take a little longer to get up to speed but once you are at speed the weight difference goes away until you come to a grade.
    > In wind and semis going by the dual axle is usually more stable.

I prefer a dual axle for safety and stability.
  • I did it once. After one trip I sold the TT. You have to keep anything heavy in front of a single axle. My friends loaded up my single axle TT after a sporting event and put all the heavy stuff in the back. Thought I'd die on the Skyway coming into Chicago! As soon as I could pull off we moved the stuff and continued on. IMHO if you have the choice duals.
