Hybred under 3K?

I've pretty much done the tent, popup, TT, Class C, a 5'ver, and last a Class A.

Would like to pursue the idea of a hybred TT if it can be pulled by a Toyota Highlander with the tow package (3K max hitch.) Does anything like that exists? Does anyone have a feeling on a good line of hybred's to look further into.

Thanks in advance.
  • Thanks to all those that gave constructive advice and good leads into trailers.
  • You'll be lucky to tow a small popup.

You can't pull a 3000 pound trailer with a 3000 pound maximum towing capacity. At least not very far. The maximum towing capacity is computed with the tow vehicle completely empty other than a 150 pound driver.

Quick rule of thumb is to subtract 1000 pounds from the max capacity and keep the trailer weight below that. In your case that's 2000 pounds and you'll be lucky to find a popup at that weight.

  • need more info on your Highlander.
3000lbs. towing capacity doesn't sound like it has the factory tow package.

    is it a hybrid Highlander?
  • The KZ Sportsmen 13FKT that bikendan mentioned is not a bad little camper at all. Had a chance for the $.50 tour a couple of years ago. The kitchen runs completely across the front, so you have a much larger than normal work area. It does have a through the wall A/C, which may or may not be good in your area. The bathroom is a wet-bath, but we had one in our boat years ago and it served it's purpose. I can't recall any storage areas because this couple had enough stuff crammed into this camper to fill a 30 footer, but feel sure you can improvise something to work for you. Nice size U-shaped dinette and an option was the hybrid bunkend at the rear behind the dinette. All in all, you got a pretty functional unit in a small space. Have not seen the other one, so no help there. I would do my very best NOT to exceed your specs or you'll be in the market for a new tow vehicle sooner rather than later. Suggest you check this out - it might be just the thing for you.

Not sure about weights, but you might also check into the teardrop trailers.
  • I'm not advocating towing anything over the rated load of your vehicle..... but unless you pull through a lot of steep hills or mountains, weight of a HTT is a distant second to the heigh/size/wind resistance. You will have a much better time towing a heavier, sleeker trailer, than a blocky light one.
Our sunset trails 17' is like towing a parachute, for a light trailer, it doesn't tow like one. I'm not sure I would tow a hybrid your vehicle. What year and powertrain is it? The only highlander info I find with a tow pack is 5000lbs?

only a handful of hybrids, will have GVWR's under 3000lbs.
KZ makes two, the Sportsmen Classic 13FKT and 16RBT.
as far as i know, these aret the only ones, currently made, that meet your criteria.
also, hybrids in this size/weight range have extremely low Cargo Capacities. so, the others that have "dry" weights under 3000lbs., will exceed that with even a light camping load.
