I have a flooring issue that needs some attention!

2006 Jayco TT - 28 foot.

In front of the kitchen sink, I have a very 'soft spot' that is 2' wide and about 3' long.

There was some water damage when we purchased it and I got underneath the camper to look.

There is a black heavy duty cloth that I am assuming is holding the insulation in place under the camper.

I want to repair the bad spot. THe linoleum is not affected. We are using a rectangle piece of plywood placed over the soft spot so that we don't drop through.

It's right up against the bottom of the cabinet.

I appreciate all input and if possible, any pics from repairs that are similar to my situation.

Thanks!

Tom

  • I'd suggest that, if you have a floor heating duct, you pull the floor cover and look at the cross section of your flooring. Some Jayco TT's were built with a composite floor (plywood and styrofoam sandwich). They are known to fail in high traffic areas like adjacent to the kitchen sink cabinet.

There are threads about this on this Forum.
  • Darco is the stuff that looks like tarp material, looks like it's woven with polyethylene strands. Coroplast is the rigid covering that they used for "enclosed underbelly" trailers, it looks like plastic corrugate cardboard, or a kid's science project exhibit board. Ditto on the Gorilla tape, it works the best that I've tried.

While you're under there make sure you don't have any leaks in either the plumbing or the drains...make sure whatever got that wood wet won't ruin the new stuff.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking but didn't want to begin without some guidance.

Is there a particular type of replacement fabric for the bottom that you would suggest?

Do search online for Darco and Corplast. Most likely you have the Darco material under it. Try to cut it in a manner that wouldn't require replacement, then patch the cuts with Gorilla Tape, that's what I did.

  • I would suggest cutting through the fabric on the bottom of the camper, pulling the insulation, and seeing if the floor looks wet from the bottom. If so, you are looking at replacing that section of floor, and the linoleum is gonna have to come up. If the floor is soft as you describe, the wood will be wet and there will be black mold growing. Open it up, dry it out, and plan on installing a new vinyl floor in the camper.
