Installing a Window on LP Tank Cover

Looking for input on installing a window on LP tank cover. Don't want to just have an opening to check tank switch.

I'd prefer a round cable hatch as it's much easier to cut a round hole rather than a square one ... the material is also unlikely to split whereas a square one can easily split at the corners.

I like the door idea. :C
  • I agree with Huntindog, as I told, there's not interest of having the LP cover watertight... so a hole in front of the gauge is just right!
  • I did as the linked pic shows. But I did not put in the plexiglass. It serves no purpose, and will just yellow over time.... And with the hole there, I can see more clearly as well as switch from one bottle to the other with my finger. YMMV
  • I did an advanced search on "propane tank cover", then searched within results for "window" and found this as an example-

  • Well, simply cut a small square or rectangle windows in your tank plastic cover in front of the regulator gauge (this is the point?), then glue a clear polycarbonate piece to cover the hole from behind... it doesn't have to be water seal as an aquarium, but you can use windows/bathroom clear silicone caulk to seal it. You may even use the silicone caulk itself as glue to stick the polycarbonate piece since windows/bathroom 100% silicone caulk are glueing very strong and water seal at the same time. You may also secure everything together with some small screws/nuts through everything (through polycarbonate part & plastic tank cover) but IMO silicone is strong enough to glue and will last forever!

This is a very easy project (and also a very good idea), you may find some small pieces of polycarbonate scraps in an hardware store because buying a full sheet is VERY expensive (100$+ for a 4 foot sheet).
