Since we got a new camper I called our insurance company (Liberty Mutual) to add the new camper to our auto policy. They said they can't insure it since they'll only insure up to $24,999. When I informed them that they had no problem insuring our old camper up to $37,500 they looked back at the policy and said it was only insured to $7,500. The call dropped right after that. I call back and speak to someone else who informs me my camper is only covered to $4,500. I asked where the discrepancies were coming in but they couldn't answer. Anywho....long story short I'm looking for a new insurance company. Who do you guys use? Are you sure you're covered for what it's worth? Bonus points if anyone has had to file a claim on their camper and succeeded. ThanksETA: does anyone have their combo insured as an RV? We don't use the truck as a daily driver and rarely even take the camper off. I'm checking with Liberty to see if this is an option.

Not a camper, but our 5er is insured through Progressive. 3rd RV we have had insured with them, and we have had 3 claims. All went smoothly.

Try progressive. I insured a new 5er with them and my old 93 truck camper. They asked me how much I wanted to insure them for and that was all they wanted. The insurance includes roadside assistance and I used that once about 5 years ago with no problems and no increase.

thanks guys. i actually got a quote from progressive online while i was talking with liberty mutual. twice the coverage for half the cost. glad to hear claims went smoothly with them.

I have a unique situation where I bought my camper as a repossession. It was 2 years old but never used- it was essentially brand new with nothing inside ever been used or turned on. Refrigerator, microwave, heater… all brand new condition. The mattress still had the plastic on it. Everyone I tried wanted to insure it as a 2 year old camper and would not insure it for the condition it was in because I was not the original purchaser.I found RV America (who underwrites through Progressive.) Should always read the policy language regarding stuff like this.

Insurance premiums are based upon many variables, but a major one is what it is going to cost to replace the covered item in a total loss. Years ago when I was in the auto insurance business, many auto policies had "additional items" coverage to a max of $5000. Add a zero for the cost of many of the new campers. Would hate to need to replace the camper only to learn you don't have coverage.

Get it in writing. Dollar amounts and the specific camper you have. Liberty mutual rep said I was covered just like you. I spoke with a different rep who confirmed then a manager had a different opinion. It wasn't covered under either despite what I was told by two different employees.

Digging up the past here a bit, but just got off the phone with USAA.

TC is covered under my auto policy while on the truck, same terms as truck, no additional cost.

Covered under my homeowner's insurance while off the truck, in my driveway or in a campground worldwide. Subject to terms of my HO policy (deductible, limits, etc.), no additional cost.

Probably credit issues stemming from divorce. Notice I am a cash buyer for the tc who saved up. Credit is lousy.

Well, screw em.

No insurance, then. (Isn't required in my state unless you've been in accidents)

No claims, no accidents in my life. A couple tickets 25 years ago.

I'll take my chances.

07 Ram Mega, full coverage, decent liability limits, $1k deductible on all. Truck is more like $6-700 per year. 03AF is $250? I think. You realize accidents, tickets, credit score, claims on other policies all affect your rate? I.e. If you have bad credit you'll pay like you have speeding tickets! It s ucks but with the immediate availability of your entire life history, insurance companies have added many more qualifiers to their rate matricies.

As several people have said it serves everyone well to fully understand your policies and shop them once in a while. Insurance companies can and are just as crooked as used car dealers. They don't gaf about you and your camper. They care about $ only.

whoa. we're paying 1200/year for 3 (close to new) vehicles and $180/year for the camper through progressive. state farm wanted $800/year more. liberty mutual who we had prior was 1480 for just vehicles and they won't insure a camper to over 24,999.
