Is a slide out roller topper needed?

We have a new Bullet 285RLS TT which is 30 ft long with an 11 ft long 3 ft deep slide. I noticed quite a few TT's at the CG's we went to this season with rubberized or canvas rollout awnings mounted above the slideout. However, it seemed like most were on seasonal TT's that are stationary . Is one of these needed if we are staying only a week at a time or less in a CG. I have a stepladder and broom and know I have to sweep the slide roof off each time before I retract it, but would a roller awning eliminate that need and if so, approx. how much is one installed?.. I don't have the knowledge or desire to do the work myself since it involves screws into the side wall. Would appreciate opinions on this.
  • call a couple of shops.... your current one first..

my 2005 Coachmen came with one when new. and NICE / Shade and NO ladder needed.
as couch and dinette is on the slide.
  • Probably more useful on an RV that actually moves.

In addition to not having to sweep the roof, on hot days it provides some shade for the slideout.

Only real downside is if the wind is bad 20-25mph or higher AND from the right direction, it can get flapping around.
  • It was standard on my Lance 981 truck camper. Don't have one on my current TT and wish I did.
  • I want one, because I'm tired of wiping down the wet roof of the slide before I retract it.
  • I dont have one and seldom have to clean it off before retracting but thought it would be nice to have one. Recently I was in a friends rig while the wind was blowing. Very noisy and at first I thought something was being torn off the roof. Maybe there is something wrong with his???

If I was east in the trees a lot of the time it would help, out west with no trees and a lot of wind and little rain, it seems it would hurt. Friendly people keep warning me to be careful about having the awning out a lot out west. Maybe the same with hearing an awning cover banging a lot. I'll continue without one. It's never a wasted trip to the roof to keep an eye on things and wipe the panels off anyway.
  • That is 4 for 4 TT owners saying you wouldn't be without them! Sounds like a good idea! THANKS.. Can any of you give me an approx cost that you paid for 1 slide topper installed?. As I quoted.. mine is 11 ft long and 3 ft deep.. My TT is currently at the dealer actually having the slide roof repaired from a 5 ft long, 6 inch thick tree limb that pierced slider roof and interior ceiling in a storm last time out.( Pretty scary!) So if I'm gonna get a topper, this would be the ideal time when she is already in the shop and season is over.. Any help any of our members can give me on cost would be appreciated. I'm in NJ so labor rate is $120 an hour at the dealer plus cost of the unit. THANKS again for your great advice!
  • I have the newest version from Carefree Colorado. They don't pool, and with really heavy rains or with snow, and just pause it periodically to let the water rub off or let the snow fall off (Snow can require some in-out movements to get it to clear on its own. I no longer end up with water inside when I bring the slides in. I do get some good slaps occasionally in high winds, like those over 50 MPH.
  • You nailed it on the head. The advantage is to not have to sweep the slide before you retract it. I still get enough water on the roof of my slide during a driving rain that if I pull the slide in the next day I will still have water on it that will come into the RV and need to be dried off before I drive away. They do flap a lot in the wind, and 2 of mine that are 12 feet long collect water on them (the 6ft one doesn't). RV's have long been without them, but even with the above quirks, I hate getting up on the roof, so I'm glad I have them.
  • Never owned an RV without them. So all I can tell you is my experience. They will hold water, flap in high wind, no more debris on slide roof. Bottom line, I would not own anmRV without them.
  • No, you don't have to have a slide topper, but they sure are nice. Saves pulling out that ladder and sweeping off the roof of the slide. We have had slide toppers on all our rv's and would not be without one. Definitely worth the cost.
