IMO it did a lot for the Ford. More OD means trucks can have lower gearing for pulling and higher gearing overall for empty running. Fords OD is arguabley a tripple OD and gets the RPM crazy low when empty. I have 6 gears and it would be awesome to have a couple more gears for empty freeway travel. It has the torque but not the gears. I can easily see how beneficial it would be to have even one more gear.
