Just bought a Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 6.7 and I'm confused

Ok, I did have a 03 F250 6.0. It had a tow/haul button. I now have the Ram 2500 Diesel 6.7. I now have a tow/haul button, a diesel exaust brake button, and a "+/-" button that is on the steering column for changing your gears. I am really confused about what I should use and when. I'm towing a 2002 Fleetwood Prowler fifth wheel.
Anybody else have the above truck with towing experience with it? I could really use some advice.
thanks for any help.

  • I have a 2012 model. T/H and E/B stay on while towing. +\- is also good on hilly roads to prevent gear "hunting". If it down shifts frequently, lock it into the next lower gear.
Enjoy the vehicle. That Cummins is an amazing engine.
  • If your like me you will find that while in tow/haul the transmission will downshift to aggressively at times you dont need or want it to. I almost never used tow/haul when going downhill unless it was tight switchbaks.
  • Also be aware that pushing the minus button will change the display from just a D showing to D 1-6. Mind you, you're gonna have to push it more than once, otherwise it will limit you to the gear you're in at the time.

As others have said, put it in tow/haul, turn on the exhaust brake and enjoy the ride.

Oh yes. Without tow/haul on, the exhaust brake cuts off after you slow to 30 MPH.

With tow/haul, it continues working until down to 20 MPH, sometimes lower, depending on conditions.
  • Use of the ebrake saves on wheel brake (truck and trailer) wear and tear. I use it 100% of the time. For city driving it barely turns itself on, but for highway use its great.

The tow haul helps the truck select the right gear for hauling.

The +/- buttons limit the highest gear your truck will use when descending hills. Its not uncommon for me to 'coast' all the way down a long hill without touching the brake or gas as the truck does all the work.
  • I never use tow-haul unless in hills , I have same truck. Always use e brake unless extremely slippery . The plus and minus button , I have used it only going down big hills in mountains .

Put it in T/H, turn the EB on and drive. It really is that simple.

Use the +/- button if going down a steep declining road. Push the (-) until you are one gear lower than it took to climb said incline...Let tranny and EB do their job.
