With all the grunt of that engine and the low 1st of the tranny (plus it's an auto) 3.42 gears work out pretty well.
I would not get a diesel truck for towing without 3.73 gears. The lower gears translates into a better EPA number that helps the truck manufacturer meet the CAFE standards for their vehicles but does nothing for the truck owner unless they drive at 55 MPH on level ground with nothing in tow.
This is a smart time to buy a 2014 truck and save yourself $8,000 or more. Just look for a truck in the state with 3.73 gears and pay cash. If you cannot afford to pay cash you cannot afford to buy the truck.
The 2500 and 3500 trucks are not subject to CAFE, hence you will never see MPG data on them.
Everything I have read shows that with the modern engines, the numerically lower numbered gears are fine.
I have the 4.10 in my truck, and I don't feel that I need them. And I tow about 17000 pounds.
