kayaks

I've posted several times asking about kayak hauling ideas.

We found our solution on Craigslist: a slightly used Malone MicroSport Trailer for a very fair price. So now we don't have to drill holes in the roof for mounting crossbars, block the solar panel when a kayak is on the roof, and especially take the kayaks off when we want to pop the roof up.

For those of you who decide a Malone MicroSport trailer is the way to go, here's some tips. Don't buy their spare tire or cargo box. Both are listed at about $100-150 each depending on the source. There are other sources for much less money.

The cargo box is made by Plano:

Amazon’s:

Zoro’s:

Zoro is a division of Grainger. This is where I bought mine.

Spare Tire and wheel:

Les Schwab Tire wanted $100. The same tire and wheel at Lowes was $75. Amazon sells it for $47 including shipping.

Pays to shop around for 20 minutes.
  • WOW - $1,400 for a dedicated kayak hauler............... I bought a 4x8 landscape trailer, where I can fit 2 kayaks and my motorcycle for $400.
    When not hauling either, I use to haul mulch, sheet-rock, plywood and
    many other Home Depot runs. I even used to to haul furniture from one home to another.

  • I agree, Gerry. They are WAY overpriced for such a specialized use. I would have never bought one new and waited until a used trailer came up for sale.

    I looked at the $400 utility trailers for use as a kayak trailer and didn't like the short tongue length, the small wheels, and the overall construction quality. Plus, I didn't want to store a 4x8 trailer at my house.

    If I need to haul the items you list, I'll use my truck.
  • I bought a jet ski trailer and mounted PVC pipe in lue of the bunks. That was first version.

    Then I modified it with a truck ladder rack kit that bolts together. I assembled upside down sorta to fit the trailer and mount both a second kayak and a Yakama box to stow our kayaking gear;

    I got the trailer off craigslist for $300 and have less than $500 into it for everything including the spare and the front wheel thingy.
