Keeping Things Cold on the Road

Interested to know how long things in refrigerator stay cold while traveling and if anything in the freezer thaws out if we're on, say, an 8 hour road day. Just bought a TT and haven't used it yet.

  • Hi,

I always run my refrigerator on propane while driving. It is a small risk to run the propane while driving, yet so is filling the gas tank and driving anyplace. It is a small risk, and the propane leak detector will shut off the propane if something happens.

Good luck, and enjoy the new (to you) trailer!

We just run our's on propane like most who travel high mileage trips.
  • Some folks are scared to operate fridge on propane while in transit.

RV fridges can be operated on propane while in transit........mfg. have designed them to operate while traveling and they have features that shut them down safely IF issues arise

The fridges when OFF can hold temps for several hours......IF completely cooled down and as long as door if left closed.
BUT way chance spoilage/bacteria growth when fridge can be turned ON :S

Run it on propane and enjoy safe, cold food

    Just think about this:
If unsafe to operate while traveling.......do you want to operate it while sleeping :H
  • Turn on the propane, bleed the air out by lighting a stove top burner. Turn the refer on, either auto or gas and go. The majority of us travel with the refer on. The rest? Guess their too paranoid to do it.
  • There are a couple of small buttons on the top of the frig, assuming it's new or relatively new, and if you turn it to on and then set it to "Auto", it will switch over to propane when you unplug from shore power. It will take a few seconds/minutes to change. As soon as you get to the campground and plug back in, it'll go back to electric. Hope that helps. While you're on the road you can keep the propane going by just leaving it at "Auto" and it'll stay cold the whole time. BTW, it will take several hours for it to cool the first time, so don't worry if it doesn't seem like a home frig. Congrats on the TT.
