Lance 650

Has anyone bought or used the new Lance 650, If so what are your thoughts and experiences?
It's a small camper but didn't feel as cramped inside as I thought it would.
It has decent sized tanks, OK fridge so it seems the only downside is that it's on the smaller side and doesn't have a compartment to store a portable Gen.
I'm thinking it might be a good contender for 1-2 people for easy travelling and light off-road use. The short overhang is a big plus.
Second choice would be the Lance 865.

  • Will the outside storage hold a Honda 2k?

No, not even close. Nice that this compartment is there, but it's very shallow, 6 to 8 inches depth roughly.

  • Thanks for the good info.
I like the 865 but think the 650 may be just right for exploring and providing just the necessities to be comfortable.
Will the outside storage cabinet hold a Honda 2k gen?
With this camper I could still tow my 21' TH.
  • 2 bikes ... Dual suspension mountain bike and cross bike (it's basically a beefy road bike that can do dirt and some trails, as well as road).

Useless dog rides in a dog backpack that I carry - he sniffs while I pedal!

Just curious , 2 bikes, does your dog ride one of them?
  • BTW, you can rent for $70/night "off season" if you just wanted to try before you buy.

How sweet is that!! If only that was an option on every type of camper. Rent for a quick trip to try it out. Money well spent I think.

The trip was just me and my 11lb Minature Pinscher in late September, dry camping in Tahoe and Plumas NF at 6000 feet and above. I stayed at 3 different campsites during those two weeks (so not that much driving around). When I did resupply or stop in a pull-out when moving between campsites I just parked wherever I wanted in this small camper.

Absolutely no issues, even with the de-featured Cruise America version of this camper.

    - heater kills the renter abused battery and runs through propane, I really limited use and ran the 5 gallon tank dry 2 days before returning home ...
    - No issues with tanks, to be "safe" i put in 6 gallons of fresh when I had acccess to a spigot. Didn't come close to running out of water, used those same 6 1 gallon containers for drinking. Grey and black, didn't dump till returning camper.
    - 5 or so navy showers during trip, did plug in the very last night for resort shower!
    - room was fine, dog has huge bed and had to jam that up against dinette to leave myself a hallway at night
    - Fridge/Freezer, had 3-4 weeks worth of meat/chicken fish in there! Milk, veggies, eggs, etc ... plenty big. It did pop open on me once when going up to Grouse Ridge up the NF dirt road (awesome spot in Tahoe NF, recommended! )
    - I too had to move things around but only because I brought two bikes, rigid 5 gallon bucket, too much booze (really!) etc.
    - bathroom size, huge,considering I'm 5'7" and 145lbs ... not 6' 200lbs ..

Great little camper, plenty of room for 1-2.

  • I own a Lance 650 and use it for equestrian events and tow my horse trailer behind it. This is my first RV I've ever owned and did not grow up RVing. I am a single woman in my 20's so everything has been a learning experience. My only issue I've been dealing with is the battery. The base camps I camp at never have electric. I've had the battery replaced under warranty 3x already in the last year and possibly a 4th considering fully charged my camper after at trip and even with solar panels on it is completely dead again. If you have a generator or plug into electric there'd be no problems. I've been told getting a generator is a dumb idea but my battery is the only issue I've been having.

I've camped with up to two people in my Lance and have never converted my dinette into a bed for a 3rd person. My best friend and I recently went on a horse camping trip where we got rained out on so we comfortably were able to hang at the dinette all day. I will say there is a lot of transferring of things. For example; during the day we put all of our stuff on the bed and at night we move all of our stuff to the dinette. When I'm cooking I'm constantly moving from the kitchen to the dinette.

A lot of people though are really surprised at the amount on room in it and are surprised to see a bathroom and shower. In a perfect world I'd love to have the 855S but I don't see the point in that any time soon considering it's just me most of the time.

Here is a link to a blog post I did about my most recent trip. There are several pics inside the camper and one from the outside.
