The color is just starting here in central NH so I would say in a week it will be great . I have never had a problem traveling throughout Vermont . Many roads are even better since the repairs from Irene . Be aware that most campgrounds will close after Columbus Day and will be crowded the 2 weekends before so plan ahead . During the week should be no problem . Enjoy .
