Length versus weight and safety

As I noted in another thread, I would like to tow a TT with my Jeep GC (5.7 V8). It is rated to tow around 7500 pounds. But I have also heard that irrespective of weight, one should keep the length down, according to one author to 20 feet given my 109.5 inch wheelbase, though with was not clear if that was with or without the hitch. I would like a TT with a built-in generator, and Nash makes one that weighs about 4550 lbs dry (so potentially workable as far as weight goes) but that is 26.4 feet long (with the hitch, no listing for without it). Is that suicide? Could I compensate by driving slower? Thanks.

    Snip...

The limiting factor for your GC (and my Ram) is hitch ball weight. I'm limited to 500 lbs (I was surprised it was so low), despite 8800 lbs tow rating. If you get much over 25-26 ft you'll go over 500 lbs on the ball. My KZ 200 is 400 lbs on the ball fully loaded.

Those limits are for weight carrying on the ball. Any tongue weights higher would require the use of a weight distributing hitch and those limits are most likely in the range of 1,000 to 1,200lbs. Those limits should be spelled out on a sticker or tag on the vehicles receiver.

  • There can be all sorts of discussion, mathematical, mechanical and otherwise about TV and TT combinations. In the end all that matters is your level of comfort and acceptance with a chosen combination.

About an hour from here there is a huge RV dealer that rents RV's of all sizes for weekly and monthly rates. Your area probably has a similar dealer - you could rent a "long" tt and a short one either this fall, or next spring depending on weather. This will let you experience towing first hand.

  • My Jeep GC weighs almost as much as your truck, close to 5000 lbs. (The hemi engine adds some heft.) I wonder if that is a sort of "offset."
  • I'm not sure it is a function of wheelbase or TT weight vs TV weight, but my 25 ft total length trailer influenced the ride of my little station wagon a lot more than it does my half ton quad cab truck.

Of course, the wagon only weighs 2700 lbs, and the truck is close to 5500.

That said, having put roughly 8000 miles on the wagon + trailer combo, I never once felt out of control. The fastest speed I bothered with was 65mph on the highways, and less if traffic was heavy and I was getting passed a lot. With the truck, I still only go 65, but I haven't felt the need to slow down when getting passed.
