The only time I idle is to warm the engine or cool the cab (AC). Idling to warm the engine is actually not effective in a diesel because they idle so efficiently, and because it is just such a large hunk of iron. I try to minimize idle because it is one of the parameters that Ford uses for their reminders on the 6.7 engine (oil change, fuel filter change, coolent check, etc.) which tells me Ford doesn't like idle time. In fact idling more than 10 minutes an hour alone is a parameter to dictate the Severe Duty oil change schedule. We average just over 12 minutes per hour with our city driving. I suspect the idling thing got started because old diesels were hard to start in the cold. The Ford 6.7 is rated to start down to -10 F without the block heater.
