What does the additional information change? Is it the tow vehicle or the trailer's insurance that pays for damage to a trailer? Adding information does not change a thing except for folks that like to point fingers.

Glad that you are so eager to assign responsibility. Actually, She (the trailer owner) was watching for clearance while I pulled into a street side parking spot. She "Thought" I had clearance. I realize that I had the steering wheel in my hands. We have already decided to split the deductible, no matter whose policy pays.

The problem is that many insurance companies now charge the insured with a claim whenever one is filed, whether they have to pay out or not. In other words, both our rates might go up if we turn it into both.

You have to read both policies to see how each is worded.
Many are worded 'while your trailer is hitched to your TV'.

You might to have collision on the TV coverage to cover an auto accident which is damage caused by the movement of a vehicle.
Liability might only cover you if you damage the property of 3rd party. If you hit someone's property with that trailer and damaged their property, that would be covered under the TV liability but not the collision of the awning on the trailer.
Its all in how the policies are worded.

You'll have to read the insurance policy. The fine print on our insurance policy states that pl/pd coverage follows us as long enough it is "legally" hitched. And claim amount is based upon value at time of occurrence.

As far as overhead clearance goes...you have to find out. I hit a tree branch and ripped my awning on a public street, two blocks from my house. No restrictive clearance signs. Called the city, they said to place a claim against them. Filled out a ton of paper work and a ton of pic's of where this branch was and has been hit many times before. Two months later claim is denied because the city has a law that exempted them from their own laws. But they would start a "work order" to trim the tree. No help to me and wrong in my opinion. But that is how it turned out. Reading your posting got me fired up again of how my city says not my fault and not their fault, but started work order. Seven months after hitting branch, still nothing has been done.

Why would you even get your friends insurance involved? When you do that, his rates go up. Are you going to pay him when his insurance rates go up for a year or more because of your mistake?

No question when I am towing my own trailer, as they are both covered by the same company.

my car insurance covers liability and property damage of MY trailer when I am towing it. Trailer insurance covers collision damage to the trailer, comprehensive etc. and liability when the trailer is unhooked.

Now, if I'm towing someone elses trailer, interesting question. probably varies by insurance company.

If it's just the awning that's damaged, might be better to just buy a new awning rather than get insurance involved, which could result in higher premiums for everyone involved.

That is a good question! I agree with OB, you are responsible for damage you caused. I doubt that even with full coverage on your own trailer, that your ins would pay for damage while towing another persons trailer.

Interesting subject, as this could happen to anyone.
