We're a family of 4 with two small kids aged 4 and 1. We'd like to buy our first camper!We live in Montana and like to camp off the beaten path. Our camper needs are pretty specific. We want a shorter camper, hard-sided / non popup, 14' total length or less. We don't want a bathroom and we'd like a queen and some bunks. Can anyone suggest some other campers that will fit the bill? Also, I'd love a little more clearance and off-road chops than the average camper.

Are you locked in on a hard sided camper. We started out with a bare bones pop-up. Just had the basics...stove, small frig..small water tank....and it actually had lots of room..Light weight, easy to tow.

Most all hard side, but small trailers other than teardrops and popups will have a bathroom. Have you thought about a 7 x 14 enclosed utility trailer. You can head queen bed and bunks on the inside with a little bit of space for a kitchen area.

I like the idea of building out a utility trailer. With work and the kids, I just don't have the time and would like something that's ready to roll.

why so small? going to be very custom and expensive. likely cheaper to get a mainstream trailer. 19' bunkhouses are common and still small. also cheap.

Don't need AC or a lav? Consider converting a cargo trailer.

The suspension and construction is heavier so it'll hold up better off road. Y
Put a lift kit on the axles, add shocks and run the same tires as your truck.

Don't think aluminum or fiberglass walls will slow a "griz" down any more than canvas will. They can rip through steel car doors and trunks.

Check out some Utube videos on converted cargo trailers. It doesn't have to be real fancy at first and you can change out the build over time.
The no BR thing is your stumbling block on a camper.
I initially was going to use my 10x6x6 enclosed cargo trailer with side door for camping. I insulated the roof and was just going to use a travel potty and hook stuff to the E-track I had installed for cargo tie down. I have snap in 2x4 holders and a piece of plywood over that provided a bed surface with storage underneath. Instead I sold the cargo trailer and bought a Wolf Pup 16BHS. Yes, it has a bathroom, even a little 12" tub in the shower, but it has the 2 bunks and a RV/short queen and cooking/fridge amenities.
The campers in the style size range you are looking at will pretty much all have a BR, even if it has an outside kitchen.
