I think the OP is referring to the actual wood seatback of the bench itself, that's the way I read it anyways:h

Push it back in place, get some small corner brackets from you local hardware store and screw them in for re-enforcement.

Velcro is your friend for a ton of things, right along with duct tape.

I have a narrow basket that I place against the wall. It hold the seat back in place and hold pencils, salt and pepper, etc. The cushion on the other side stays in place.
