Loud tow

We have a heartland mallard m29. It has the wide track wheels. It is very loud when turning especially. Is this normal. Looked under Neath at the axles nothing seams to be wearing. Only been at this a couple months now.

If your weight distribution setup uses spring bars, check that the brackets that hold the chains have not moved. It made quite a noise when it happened to me. The installer did not tighten the bolt enough when he installed mine. Just relocate the bracket so the chain hangs straight down and retighten the bolt. The truck/trailer combo have to be lined up together.

Aside from that, my setup also grunts and groans in tight turns and I do use a bit of grease on the tow ball, the spring bars, and on the sway control balls.

What is a "wide track" wheel?

Wide stance wheels , the equilizer is wider than he 6" on most trailers . it makes the wheels farther apart.

  • The squeaking sounds are from the spring shackles. The plastic bushings wear out quickly and it is steel on steel. I added wet bolts to mine(7 each side) and after they were greased, all noise went away.Trailer tows thru campgrounds quietly now. bolts are only about $6 each

Now that's funny! Sure hope your other half doesn't see the post.
  • I use a drop of Mobil-1 5w-30 on spring shackles, trailer ball, trunion sockets and WD chains at the bracket and bar. Greatly reduces those creeks and groans. I thought about squirting a little over in the passenger seat. :B
  • Yes, it's normal. There is a lot of things on a trailer that is metal to metal.

    Spring leafs
    WD bars and chains
    Some spring perches
    WD bar chains
    Ball to receiver

All kinds of things. Just turn your radio up louder if it bothers you.

    All is good! :)
  • Could it be the WDH? They often make loud creaking, groaning and popping sounds when turning. Makes a good signal for folks to get out of your way when arriving at or leaving a CG. You just need to ignore this.

Trailer axles have a slightly different turning radius and when going around a corner, backing into a site, etc., and one set of tires on an axle get dragged across a road surface. Spread axles would be worse for this. Never heard of this making a loud noise tho. For fun, stop some day half way through a turn (like say in a CG) and see how much the camber of one set of wheels on an axle changes...
