In theory, Discount Tire would have returned the tire to Maxxis for reimbursement. Whether they actually did that or decided to absorb the costs themselves is subject to speculation.
But if they did, Maxxis would have the opportunity to examine the tire - and MIGHT be able to tell you what happened. As someone who has looked at many, many failed tires, I can tell you that most of the time, you can't tell what the cause was.
And one last thought:
EVERY tire failure needs to be reported to NHTSA. They are NOT going to even think about looking at the problem unless there are many reports to justify their actions.
