Perhaps some exotic V6 super charged engines... Unless these 6 cylinder cars are low 12 second they would have fell victoms.
Are you quite sure of that? I did a little quick research and according to Wikipedia a 1970 Superbird with the 426 Hemi ran a 1/4 in 14.3 at 104 mph. Car and Driver tested a 2012 V6 Toyota Camry that ran the 1/4 in 14.3 at 101. The new Mustangs are running high 12s, low 13s.
The old muscle cars were a lot of things, but not faster than today's cars.
I was referring to my Chevelle and not the other muscle cars.
On a side note Sunday I got to sit in a brand spanking new Corvette. It's a really nice car but my problem was getting in and out of it. I guess I'm getting old. :EFishOnOne wrote:

That particular 454 had high compression and solid lifters from the factory. The only factory car that I remember that could really compete was a Buick GNX 455.
GNX came out in 1987. I think you meant to say GSX, probably with the Stage 1 455.
Your right it was basically the Buick Stage 1. That car was very fast and would dust most other factory cars.
Your '70 Chevelle could of been the LS6...450 hp/454. They were the high HP rated muscle car of the muscle car era. The big problem they had...was traction. Give them good tires and limited slip...they were very hard to beat, even match. A buddy had one.
You're also right about the Buick 455 Stage 1. Another ultra torquey muscle car that like the 454, was very difficult to beat.
Lessmore,
I'm impressed and your the first here for me to say "you gained my respect"... I was wondering if someone would have figured out the LS6. It's a real nasty engine! :B
And yes when matched up against the Buick Stage 1 (It's 455 was real nasty too :B)) it basically came down to the driver/experience and the quality of tires.
It's my belief that the LS6 powered Chevelle and the Buick Stage 1 would hands down beat pretty much any factory powered car during that era in a 1/4 race.
Now we all know what Fish's DNA is like and why I like a powerful trailer pulling truck. :B- LessmoreExplorer II

Old 454 Chevelles, Super birds, GSX's were all great in their day, but today quite a number of different brands of 6 cylinder cars will smoke every one of them.

Are you guys talking stock or 'built' engines?
Helped an older neighbor stuff in a big cam, big Holly and headers into his
mid 60's SS396. Neck and neck with another buddies Road Runner 440. They ran
out of road before either beat the other
King of my city back then was a guy who I helped stuff a 427 into his Falcon
Big cam, big Holly, headers and some tweaks to stiffen the body along with
axle snubbers...he didn't like traction bars
Peter White's 396 Goat was okay. Never let anyone touch his, so don't know what
he had in it
Canary Yellow with black interior was the hot color combo back then. Only the
Falcon was black
PS...the GTR is quicker...IIRC 3.9 0-60
I'm talking basically stock with the exception of a modified distributer and air shocks on the rear end.Dog Trainer wrote:

All I can say is my '70 Chevelle 454 dusted every Dodge/Chrysler, Ford/Mercury variant out there... Chargers, Challengers, Imperials, Mustangs, Mach I, Boss. It didn't matter, but the Hellcat would be too much.
You must have lived on the slow side of town or maybe it was the brand you were smoking back then. I guess you never ran against the chrysler 440 's or the Ford 428 cobra jets. The 454 was then and still is a dog of a motor.
Yes the vehicles listed above had 440's and 428's... That 454 dusted them including some Chevelles with some modified small blocks. I never ran a 426 Hemi, but we do know the Hellcat Challenger is faster.
