MPG on 5.7L Hemi

Hi... we’ve just sold our 2001 Dodge Ram CTD and we’re currently looking at ordering a 2018 Dodge Ram Outdoorsman crew cab with a 5.7 L Hemi with a 6’4” Box.

Our travel trailer is a 24’ I-Go, weighing in around 4,000 lbs.

What we’re having trouble finding, is what kind of average gas mileage we can expect towing a trailer the size of ours.

Anyone out there towing a trailer similar with a Dodge Hemi 5.7L that can give us some real figures?

Thanks!

Which transmission, which axle ratio? Both will have a direct bearing not only on how well the truck tows but also fuel mileage - or lack thereof. ;)

    8 speed automatic with 3.92’s

The 5.7 Hemi gets similar mpg to the 5.7 Tundra. Budget and plan on 8-9 mpg. Then you'll be happy when you get better, and you will get better, and you will get worse. Plan on 8-9 and you'll be happy. Nobody on this forum can say you will get 11 mpg overall; too many factors involved like up-hill down-hill, etc.

I would think 12-15 if you have a light foot? Maybe someone with a trailer about your weight will chime in.

Count on 10 miles to the US gallon just as we all do and you'll be in the ballpark. My 19' Coachmen averages ~ 4800 lbs loaded & ready to camp and towing with my 5.3L Silverado I typically see 10.5 to low 12s, depending on terrain and wind.

    12 mpg - maybe, but 15? Now that's funny! :p
  • Never saw better than 11mpg with my previous 5.7 towing the trailer in my signature. That was better than my 6.4 which gets roughly 9.

Towing speed 55-60, cruise control, tow haul mode on.

These are numbers from the computer, I don't really care about numbers enough to mess with manual calculation.
  • I don’t know about mpg, I would guess 11. I would be very interested in what you think of your new truck after towing with an older diesel. So after your first trip, would you mind posting a report?
  • “Our travel trailer is a 24’ I-Go, weighing in around 4,000 lbs.”

Wet and loaded your I-Go weighs 4,000 pounds at 24 feet? Not what I’m seeing on line. Have you weighed it? At 22 feet my Winnie is 3,740 pounds dry and 5,100 ready to go.
  • Towing a 31' fifthwheel, gross loaded weight about 9,600.. got a 2013 2500 CC LB 5.7 Hemi..... light foot, 55-58 mph.. around 9.5 to 10 mpg.

So, guesstimate on half the weight of your trailer? I would think 12-15 if you have a light foot? Maybe someone with a trailer about your weight will chime in.
