My 6.0 actually has a little problem (Rollingrock) UPDATED

I made it this far without a hicup.....LOL

While pulling the 5er home this past camping trip, my Edge Insight alarm went off and it was flashing coolant temp (ECT) 228 degrees.

I obviously got off the throttle, was only doing 65 at the time anyway, no sound of the fan on either. Got the camper put away in storage and let the truck idle while I did so, temps went down and stayed around 186 degrees (Same for EOT) they were dead even. I got it home and looked around, no puking, coolant level is normal, no loss (Thank the Lord)...so I called my buddy Matt who did all the work in my signature, he runs a Diesel shop here in Tarrant County and he said prob a bad stat or weak fan clutch.

He gets the truck on Wed for testing. Hope it's a simple fix. Proud of my ol girl despite her being a 6.0.

Funny thing today, I ran the truck for quick trip to the shop to pick up a few things...when I got home the temp was solid 200 degrees. The dash needles haven't moved...the show all as "normal"

We'll get her worked out but that alarm going off about make me jump out of the seat, never heard it before. Little sucker is loud. LOL
  • What do you have your warning signal set at for cooling? I set mine at 220 and it at times will hit that pulling a long hill. Thinking about pulling the muffler (no Cat version) and running a straight pipe to see if that may cool it down.
  • Good luck, RR. Hope it proves to be easy. I'll keep an eye on this thread, too, at least until the boys show up!
  • A second thought - I noticed in your list of modifications that you don't have the upgraded fuel pressure regulator spring listed. The upgraded spring is critical to keep the correct fuel pressure, so I would look into that immediately. fuel pressure should be around 60 psi at idle with the spring installed. About $45 at the Ford dealer, it's the only one they stock since around 2009, and easy to change.

  • OP has a EGR delete so upgrading the EGR cooler is a moot point. The issue with the EGR cooler is the oil cooler coolant passages plug up and the EGR cooler is starved of coolant so overheats and fails. With that out of the way...

The 2006 engine uses the EGR valve as part of the radiator fan control system, and if the EGR valve is disconnected the fan will not operate correctly. Some say you can over-ride this with tuning, others say plugging the valve back in is enough. Thermostats are a known issue, they usually stick open but can stick closed, easy part to change and not expensive. The dash gauge reads in the center for a wide range of temps, from around 160 to 230 degrees, because Ford thinks those temps are normal. Trans temp gauge is similar, reads center from around 120 to 200 or so. Oil pressure gauge is hooked up to a switch, not a sender, and reads in the center for all oil pressure over 7 psi.

Edit - you should be able to program the Edge Insight to read the fan RPM (FSS). The PCM uses several things to determine requested speed, including EGR, trans temp, coolant temp and I think air conditioning. The fan runs all the time, is variable speed and normally is on pretty high around 215 degrees. If the fan comes on it pulls the coolant temp down quite quickly. Not having the EGR valve in place and hooked up is supposed to make it impossible for the fan to come on high but I have the EGR system as stock in my truck so I don't have personal experience with a delete.

  • the first thing i'd do is upgrade the egr cooler from one with fins to one with tubes. This is one major issue with the 6.0. The fins break off and then plug the system up leading to major failure
