my near disaster

We had a great vacation camping at Delaware Seashore State Park. The best part was walking a few hundred yards from the campsite to the beach (and not having to pay to park!). Last Friday we packed up and headed back to NJ. I didn't have any issues until I pulled up on our street. As I went to back the TT into the space next to my house, the brake controller started making weird noises, and I felt like I ran something over as I tried to back up. I got out to check and there was nothing in the path of the tires, so I continued to try and back up. The trailer would not budge, so I knew something was wrong. I dsconnected the brake controller but it didn't remedy the problem. So I disconnect the 7-pin connector and that freed up the TT and I was able to back into my spot and get it off the street.

It was then that my daughter showed me the 7-pin harness electrical connector. Apparently it got loose and was dragging on the pavement, and had wore away all the insulation on one side and exposed the wires, which were then shorting themselves out. This must have caused the brakes to lock up when backing up.

The brakes locking up caused another issue. I noticed that the wheels on one side of the TT were no longer centered within the wheel wells. It looks like the axles shifted position on the leaf springs. This must have been what gave me the impression that I ran something over. However, at least the tires don't look to be impacted in any way. I think this all this damage occurred right in front of my house.

Which indicates to me that the electrical cord must have only started dragging late in the trip. If it had worn down even further during the trip, I would have been stuck on the interstate with no trailer brakes or lights. Worse yet, the brakes may have locked up at full speed.

I don't dare drive this back to the RV dealer, which is an hour away on high speed roads (risk of tire damage if the axles are out of alignment). There is a general trailer repair place about 5 miles from my house. I think they would be able to repair the 7-pin connector wire harness and possibly be able to fix the axle shifting. The TT is out of warranty so that isn't an issue. I'm going to see if they can send someone to my house to evaluate the situation first, but if they can't, I think I can make it to their place without brakes on low-speed road. I have no idea how much this is going to cost to fix, but I'm hoping it isn't an arm and a leg.

But anyway you slice it, I really dodged a bullet here as it could have been a lot worse.

Has anyone here had an issue with their 7-pin harness wire coming loose and dragging? How about the axles shifting on the suspension?
  • My 7 pin connector on my truck has a cover that holds the connectors together so it won't come out. Also my p3 brake controller will tell me if there is no trailer connected. Even my older voyager would let you know if the trailer was not connected because it would not power on.

No issues with my axles but i have only owned the th for a year.

Hope you have an easy repair.

I certainly plan on zip tying this one to the trailer frame so it doesn't have enough slack to drag!

Thanks for sharing so I could learn from it. I will incorporate a zip tie on mine in the future.

Is your 7 pin connection typically loose? I ask because mine (when properly plugged in) takes a good bit of effort to unplug, so it's hard to imagine it coming out on its own.

When you hooked everything up did you leave enough slack in the cord that the trailer could turn on the ball all the way to the left and right without unplugging the cord?

The wire did not come loose from the plug end. The cord is pretty long, so there is a certain amount of slack that is tucked in between the leveler and the gas tanks, and it has never come loose before. But you are right, there always needs to be enough slack for the TT to turn both ways. I'll have to measure that out before I tie the slack to the frame.
  • Yep happened to me two weeks ago coming back home. Pulled in for some fuel and a lady next to me at the pump told me 'something was hanging down on the ground'. Looked and found the harness was dragging on the ground, little wear on the plug itself, got some tie wraps and tied it to the outlet hinge door. Called my truck dealer the next day and they checked it out and ordered a replacement part, will be installed tomorrow. Possible cause weak spring tension on outlet flap/hinge. Still next time out I will be securing it with either a Velcro strap or mini bungee cord.

I've had a connector come out and now use a zip tie to keep it tight.

As for the axle moving on the leaf spring, I'd take a close look at it if you haven't already. There's a pin that goes through the spring pack and into a hole in the spring pad on the axle. This should prevent the axle from shifting, but I suppose it could jump this pin if the u-bolts were loose or it could have sheared off. I'm thinking the suspension may have been binding causing the appearance of it being off (I hope).

Thanks - I was not aware of the pin. I'll try to get under there and take a look.

As far as the electrical harness, I am also considering doing it myself. I assume I'd have to replace it back to the electrical box mounted to the frame? Or does it get spliced in just past where the damage occurred? I don't think I'd be able to do a splice job mid-wire.

  • I had my harness drag once. I have since tied it up a bit to the TT frame. If you are handy with wiring, why not replace the harness yourself and save some money? Amazon and eTrailer have the cables.
