Need help choosing a TT my truck will pull

Hi all,

Sorry for another one of these types of threads but I want to gather as much info as possible before we actually look. We were Class A travelers for over 10 years, but sold a few years ago and now want to get back into camping. See my wants/questions/specs below:

Since my tow rating is low, thinking ultralight but is this a bad choice because of cheaper/lighter materials used? Quality suffers?

Preferred size: 26-30 ft? no bunkhouse
Weekends / weeklong trips several times a year
1/2 ton F150 - 8100# towing capacity

Interested to hear some suggestions on a size/weight TT that would work and not push the limit of my TV.

Thanks in advance!

Ken

  • ~ 6,000LB dry trailer = game on. I'm a big fan of the Coyote V8, best kept secret in a gas engine. It brings "the mostest for the leastest..." Think about it, 380 ft/lbs of torque out of a 5.0 naturally aspirated. It's quite remarkable. My Ford 5.8L Windsor was at the top of it's game with fuel injection, hydraulic roller lifters etc. and it only has 325 ft/lbs torque.

Put that bad boy to work, check with the dealer about a gear change if you want to be more comfortable towing in the mountains.

I enjoyed this little video: (I really appreciate the Ecoboost, but I'm pretty frugal)
    Which F-150 engine?
  • Thanks for all the answers and tips! Truck is optioned with the tow pkg, seen on the window sticker, includes all theoldwizard1 mentioned but does have the 3:31 gear as stated. Can't say we'd never go to the mountains but would keep that in mind when planning.

Dry weight must be the trailer itself, unloaded with no water or gear? So GVWR is a loaded trailer, water, and everything else inside.

We just started looking and so far found one we both like which is at the MAX of what it seems like I should go with. 33' and 6145 dry weight.

We pack light since our class A gas did not have a high CCC so what is a typical GVWR that I can expect with a TT with 2 adults and a Golden Retriever?

We are going to the RV show in August and so I will be looking to find a nice floorplan and a TT that is a little less weight than this first one we found.

  • 8,100 means you've got the 3.31 fuel economy gears, not great for towing so I'd shy away from the max unless you're never going to go to the mountains. Like Bobbo said 6-7,000 gvwr and around 30-32 feet would be a good area to look. Luckily that gives you a lot of trailers to look at =)

    Ford specs are confusing:

I have the 7100# GVWR option seen on my window sticker
    Payload 1870
    GCWR 13,500
    Max Loaded Trailer weight 8400

Sorry another spec sheet states 8100

Does the sticker specifically say it has the HD Tow package ? If not, then you probably do NOT have the HD radiator, auxiliary transmission cooler or 7 pin trailer connector.

These all can be added and should be if you are towing anything that is Class III (> 3,500 lbs).

What is the rear axle ratio ? Again, you should have a 3.73 or higher axle ratio if you are towing a Class III.

If you get a trailer no larger than 6000# GVWR (not dry weight) you should have plenty of cushion. That is about 75% of the truck's tow rating. It also gives you a tongue weight of no more than about 900#, leaving about 900# for people and stuff.
  • Thanks afidel, 2014 F150 SuperCab, 2WD, 5.0 Coyote V8, 360 HP, 380 lb-ft torque
  • With 1870 and only 2 of you you'll be ok with a lot of trailers, your vehicle might be one of the few limited by power more than payload, which engine do you have?
  • We found that with our 2002 GMC 1/2 ton truck, if the factory stated dry weight was under 6000 we were okay. We had 5 different TT between 26 and 32 foot. As long as we followed the 6K rule truck pulled fine. Also we do not over pack.

  • What's your payload capacity? That's usually the limiting factor for a half ton.
