I will stick to the 6500 limit and start there.
thanks again for everyone's input
With a family of 5 even that 6500 might be a TAD high and more than likely you might need to keep the trailer "dry weight" in the 5000 to 6000 range. How much you actually load into the trailer can vary a lot, but generally it's around 1,000 for just two people and I would use a figure of 1,500 as a reasonable estimate for a family of 5 like you have. Another somewhat "WILD CARD" in this is tongue weights can really vary a lot especially once you get a trailer loaded that weighs in the 7,500 to 9,000lb range. A good target is 12 to 13%, but for the aforementioned weights tongue wts. could be anywhere from 1,100 to 1,400lbs and that will end up exceeding your TV receiver rating and TV cargo capacity and even potentially the RAWR or tire rating.
What one really needs to do is to load everyone in the TV, fill it up with fuel and pack anything you might think you would carry like bikes, firewood, extra coolers, etc. and get some "REAL WEIGHTS" from a CAT scale so you have something other than "FANTASY NUMBERS" to deal with.
