New F350/450 vs used F450 or Ram3500
We have triplet 6 year old boys. So we need a bit of room for the kids. Which means we need a trailer that isn't too small.
My wife is pre-occupied with safety. She saw that the new Super Duty Fords have the Blind Spot monitor and adaptive cruise control, among other electronic do dads. She figures this will make hauling a trailer easier and safer.
My issue is Fords blind spot system only works for trailers shorter than 33 ft, AND it has to be a "conventional trailer", not a fifth wheel or gooseneck. Well that's a problem because we're looking for a fifth wheel or toy hauler. And it's likely going to be 38-42ft long. So the blind spot thing is going to be useless except for when we're unhitched.
As for adaptive cruise, I have it on my Subaru and I love it. My wife OTOH never uses it because she too bothered to learn how to use it. She says it's "too complicate". Riiiiight.
I can pick up a 2016 Ram 3500 Laramie in the mid-$50k range. The new Ford F450's seem to go for $70-80k with minimal discounts to be hand (and scarce inventory). Heck, I'd even be happy with a Ram 3500 Tradesman or SLT since I like cloth interiors.
I'm kind of loathe to throw in an extra $15-25k for minimal benefit. I know you can install wireless cameras at the back of the trailer to help with lane changes, backing up, whatnot.
Is it worth it to spend the extra $$$ for the latest and greatest Super Duty?
I know, I know. This is one of those "well is it worth it to you?" type of questions I should be the one answering. The bottom line is I want a safe vehicle for my family, but yes, cost is an issue.
