I agree with SugarHillCTD. In my opinion, your tires will be your limiting factor. Depending on your vehicle handling preferences, you might add a greater load capacity tires, a heavy anti-sway bar, air bags (or similar), and over time heavier than stock shocks.
Other than with tires, I am not as concerned with total weight. My truck is a 1997 2WD 2500 auto trans. My total weight if 10,400 lbs. I have had it with this TC since 2004, and have well over 150,000 miles on it. With the upgrades I suggested, the only issue I have had is tires too soft, and the 19.5's took care of that.
After considering tire load capacity, I suggest running what you have and modify those things you do not like.
