and they'll lose the towing race, the payload race and the interior amenity race. RAM came out with a NEW frame, revamped engine and a NEW interior. GM is still riding on a frame from 2011...almost 10 years old.
GM....death by a 1,000 paper cuts - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIThey certainly limit the power in the lower gears. But above that they actually put a high percentage of advertised HP to the ground.

The "CLEAN" engine should deliver better MPG.
2019 is the 30 year RAM/Cummins anniversary along with the 100 year for Cummins.
It will be interesting to watch, but I wouldn't expect to see much in that area. The other issue is Ram seems to mask the power by over use of electronic nannies. 1000 footpounds is impressive, but does nothing but burn more fuel if they don't let it be used. It will be interesting to see. They will be able to claim the most torque, the reality is while the engine is capable of a lot, you likely will not have access to it when you really want it. But we will see. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIOne other thing they kept are the “Antler” tow mirrors.

It's no longer made by Allison. It's marketed as one because there's a customer loyalty in the name, but it's a GM trans.
So it's an "Allison". - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIThe "CLEAN" engine should deliver better MPG.

As for MPG, that would be great but you wont see any significant increases coming, the more power you make the more you have to feed it. There might be some efficiencies found somewhere but there isn't going to be anything to make much of a difference. If it makes 1000 foot pounds and anything over 425 hp you will likely see the kind of mpg we already see at 910 ft/pounds.

The 2020 GM HD trucks will be here in a few months. They are supposed to have a revamped engine and a new transmission. Even though it was co-developed with Ford I think that is going to be billed as an Allison.
Shortly after that we will probably see Ford step it up some too, starting with the half ton models.

The company that significantly improves mileage AND lowers the price of their full sized "power" pickups will win this race.
Lower price, never happen.
