There are times that you can get the Champion 3100 inverter for close to $700. That would work for your AC, and many have given it good reviews. IMO, this is the best quiet generator out there, for the dollars spent.

I picked up my Champion 3100 from Costco in the summer on sale for $699. Right now with hurricanes threatening the East Coast, no one is discounting generators. May be better off waiting until after hurricane season. - RedRocket204Explorer

When you need the most power from a generator, when it's hot and you want to run a A/C is when you will find out that heat and altitude can cost you 40% of your generators output at 10,000 ft. It takes a Champion 3500/4000 to run our 13.5 A/C up there and even then the converter has to be turned off.
Do you have your generator jetted for the altitude?
I do know that jetting for altitude won't get you back all the power but it should help it run better and more efficient.
I haven't rejetted my generators yet because I don't use them. Champion has a high altitude jet but it's only rated for up to 3000 ft or so the last time I checked.
Thanks. 3000 ft only? Wow. - JiminDenverExplorer II

Nearly thirty replies from people that have never seen the generator in person, so I might as well add mine.
This forum is funny..The question he asked was will this generator run his 8000 btu air conditioner..Nothing else....Yes,it will/should at a draw of only 6.2 amps for the air conditioner. My Honda 2k runs my 5k air at an idle.
My previous reply was on noise and how each of us interpret it.I thought the link provided made the Honda 2k sound noisy compared to the Westinghouse but having run chainsaws all my life for a living,my hearing isn't what it used to be on certain sounds.
I don't scrimp on gen sets being miles and miles from any town while camping or working,I want one well known for reliability under all conditions and why I have two Honda's. - edekgbExplorerCan you "jet" any of the inverter generators or only certain ones with "jetting kits" - well not me but can a small engine shop

Westinghouse has a new stronger invertor generater. WH2400i. Will this power my new 2016 amerilite 198bh air conditioner? It is a 8000 btu fridgedair ac.

If a generator is rated for 2,000 watts and the load is 1,000 watts, then I bet that it will work. If they are lying about their rating, then all bets are off. - RedRocket204Explorer

I found the WH more pleasant to the ears than the Honda. My Honda 3k is quieter to me running max than my Honda 2k on eco mode.
Each of us have a different take on high and low pitch sounds. - JiminDenverExplorer IIWhen you need the most power from a generator, when it's hot and you want to run a A/C is when you will find out that heat and altitude can cost you 40% of your generators output at 10,000 ft. Every time I mention A/C at high altitude I hear the same thing. You don't need A/C up there. Funny thing is the 80's are normal and the 90's are the highs. Add in that a Ameri-lite has little insulation and unless you have it shaded, it's a easy bake oven at lower temps than you would think. It doesn't take much so I run a 5000 BTU A/C off of batteries and solar instead of listening to a open frame generator.
A small motor in a larger generator is going to be running balls to the wall at full load. It will be louder than a similar generator with a larger engine and it will wear out faster too. A inverter generator really shines when the load allows it to run at reduced rpm's, not much difference from a open frame running full out.
Watch craigslist and you can catch a Champion 2000i for $400 or less. I've only seen a few 3100i's but they were not that good of a deal. - pira114Explorer IIOne thing I've learned with many things, especially RV stuff, is trying to save money often leads to more money being spent.
I'd buy the best you can. Buy once, cry once.
