New to TT

Over here from the Class A side. Trying to decide if TT or 5th wheel is better for me. I have a 1997 GMC Dooly with 454 engine, 10,000 lb. GVWR as tow vehicle. Want something to tow without worrying about overloading. Just wife and dog. No kids so do not need bunkhouse. Want king size bed if possible. Would also like 50 amp and 2 a/c's. Throw some ideas at me. Always purchase used and would like to stay $10,000 or below. Do all my own work so maintaince is no problem.

You got homework to do, something no one else but you can do.

AWH, I thought you would help, I guess not. :S

The things you are looking for fall more into the 5er arena than TT. Even then finding a used one configured as you like is going to be a challenge. Instead of dual 13.5k AC's, you might consider a single 15k unit. Ducted air conditioning is fairly efficient at cooling, and much more quiet in the bedroom.
Additionally, many campgrounds only offer 30 amp service, so you could only run one AC at a time anyway.
A 30 foot 2001 Layton Skyline will run around 10 to 13K depending. While a 2004 Coachmen Spirit of America runs about the same price. Some of those have 2 AC's as well.

Thanks, this is what I requested, listing of 5th wheels or TT with the 3 Items I requested (50 amp, duel A/C, and close to $10,000 in value). So many units listed on RV Trader, Craigslist, etc. do not list these items. I would be willing to go up in money for the right TT or 5th wheel.

  • Sounds like you're looking for a 5th wheel, esp considering your TV. I agree with the others that you should go to the shows and dealers and window shop and find an appealing floor plan. From there I'd cruise the RV trader and Craigslist to get some idea of prices. For 10 k I'm thinking you're looking at something 5 to 10 years old. I just sold a 2004 hybrid that was I fair shape, so I'm sure there are some deals out there on your price range that would need minimal work to be good to go. If you are a former class A type you probably know what to look for as far as condition. Just no engine or drive train to worry about

Go to some of the shows, get an idea of what is available and what you like. Talk to the salesmen, and when you find one you like give him your wish list and contact info. Lot's of trade ins done at these shows, and he would probably be thrilled at a quick sale.

I appreciate the post, however, I hate dealing with salesman. (I was one for 21 yrs. so I know how they operate). I can deal with individuals much better. Both seller and I will feel much better after the sale. I am looking for suggestions on make, model, and size of TT in my range of price and towability.
  • Campigloo gave some great advice about RV Shows. My wife and I went to a couple so we knew what floor plane we liked. I did some internet searching and we bought a slightly used tt with the floor plan that was right for us.
