- dakonthemountaiExplorerIt's a fun book! I've got it and have read it a few times through the years. Enjoy it! :)
Dak - sleepyExplorerI built my first self contained cabover truck camper in 1969...
... then, a few years later I read Travels with Charley... I was intrigued with the origins of the camper that was used for the trip by John Steinbeck in 1960. (you have to read the book)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and rekindeling my memories.
A sleepy chet - ejfranzExplorerThis looks like a book I should read. I downloaded the sample from iBooks which is a new addition with an introduction by another author. The intro is very informative and I look forward to reading the book.
Thanks for the post. - Nautique200ExplorerThanks for the post. I just ordered this book and look forward to reading it. My dog Cooper and I will enjoy doing so.
- brahlfExplorerI especially like the part where he decides to take a short cut through Canada. I about fell off my chair with laughter. I could just imagine what was going to happen next.

- jmtandemExplorer III read it several years ago. It is a good read. Apparently, not a lot has changed over the years with RV tires/wheels.
- sleepyExplorerOf course Travels with Charlie is literature.... each reader has the right to decide things like what constitutes literature for themselves.
The important thing is... do you, or did you enjoy it?
I believe that people with an uppity attitude about certain books or authors actually turn other people off to reading.
I won't pretend to speak for you.... I just hope that you will take time to read anything at all. Find your own way....
And yes... by all means... read Travels with Charlie... everyone needs a little fun in their lives.
Janet and I watch little TV... don't have cable... Many people from our generation are readers.... and we aren't stuck in a book from the 60's. We purchase as many as 100 books a year, most from Amazon.com... we read them and pass them on... many of our TC friends have taken them home with them... and left their favorites with us.
Amazon will be shipping 7 brand new hardback books (preordered) on January 7th... no kindells for us.
Chet (and Janet)
PS... We may have the only truck camper with a built-in bookcase. - Buzzcut1Nomad II

An interesting book from the "See America" point of view...but I must warn away any folks who, like me, worship Steinbeck as one of the American Greats, literature-wise.
It's an entertaining read, but it's not literature according to the standards he set with such great works as "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Tortilla Flat".
to truly appreciate an author, a painter, an actor etc one should, no must! experience the total body of their work rather than cherry pick what someone even ourselves deems most worthy.
We all have different experiences and will react in our own ways to what we read and see....Eyes wide open rather than eyes wide shut is for me the best approach.
