Cummins has built V-8 diesels previously, with the most being in the agricultural and marine power-plant applications. Meaning way too heavy for smaller vehicles.
Their 903 cubic inch V-8 was one of the leaders in power in the agricultural applications dating from the late 1970's and forward. Dependable as well.
They also placed this motor in 45 foot Coast Guard cutters patrol craft. As a former, now retired, law enforcement officer, I was lucky enough to serve on a few of these craft in joint forces type operations. Twin, meaning two motors, both 903 Cummins V-8 diesels, could really move these boats along.
I am aware of other displacement V-8 diesels made by Cummins, but just to the extent I know they were made. No knowledge of applications in these other motors, as I have only had personal experience with the aforementioned 903 CI V-8 diesel.
