Interesting turn of events. I wonder why they are putting a big 5.0 diesel in a half ton...? 500 ft/lbs of torque is awesome, but it seems like WAAAAAAY overkill for a half ton truck with limited payload. I'd be interested to see if Nissan is planning a HD truck with higher payload... I was disappointed that Ram didn't offer a HD platform, but they have a smaller engine and appear to be aiming for the fuel efficient market more so than the RV market.
I'm thinking the same thing.
I'm betting Nissan will offer the 5L in a 3/4 ton version or at least a heavy half-ton truck in their new line up. It wouldn't make much sense to put it in just a regular half-ton as the weight you could potentially tow with that engine would definitely be 3/4 ton territory and you'd have to beef up payload etc anyways.
Ram with the 3L fits perfectly in line with their half-ton market and seems aimed at those who are looking for better mileage while still retaining a decent towing spec. It'll probably work out really well in that regard.
I'm not sure at this point if the two are even going to be aimed at competing with one another for the reasons specified above, even though RAM initially did have plans to put the 5L in their half-tons a while back. But was it detuned for half-ton duty for the RAM back then or would it have been offered in a heavy half-ton or 3/4 ton? I don't know.
Either way, I'm happy Nissan seems to be taking another stab at it. I still see a number of Titans at the campgrounds towing TT's and if the owners were unhappy with them, they'd be using something else by now.
