WRT Nissan, I agree that this gives them instant credibility but this is a monstrous engine for a 1/2 ton. So unless they have a trick up their sleeve I think in the end this will hurt them. It will not get the mpg it needs to stay competitive with other offerings. I think RAM has got the sizing right with the 3L. It will have the power needed and be a lot more fuel efficient.
Whatever happens it is going to be interesting to see how Ford, GM and Toyota react. Ford IMO has the right solution with the EB but if diesels do take off their hand may be forced. Fords current dance partner AVL (and subsidiaries) has tons of diesel experience and may already have something in the works. GM could probably get something from Isuzu and Toyota's small diesel is in dire need of a refresh.

I've yet to see a diesel powered Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 VM motori :B
