I would NOT buy a 240hp, 5000lb+ truck. That's early 90's power lever. And don't count on the 8 speed. That 8 speed only turns horsepower into push at the wheels, you cannot multiply torque into horsepower, the diesel ram will be pokey, and slower with a load. I'm thinkin 0-60 around 10 seconds, and prolly over 30 with a 5K trailer. Never mind the cold climate implications of a European motor in North America.
The Cummins seems overkill, but if it has 300hp, well, that matches the BASE engines on 1/2 ton trucks.
That is only part of the story, 420 lb-ft of torque. Plus transmission ratios and differential gearing all play into this. IMO to many people get caught up in 1 or 2 ratings and don't consider the whole package. 240/420 is plenty to move that truck around and do some work with. Granted it won't win the 1/4 mile but that is not its purpose.
Can you explain to me what you mean by "cold climate implications"?.
