Folks, there's nothing magical about diesel engines. Everybody knows how to build them or where to get them. They have their place, like in the HD trucks the Big 3 build. It's a niche aimed at those who tow big, like big 5ers, etc. All the mfgs could put a small diesel in a 1/2 ton if they thought they would sell enough to recoup their investment, which would be in the many millions. Toyota, Nissan, GM, Ford, etc, could do it with ease. But it's a matter of ROI (return on investment). That's why Toyota will never build a 3/4 ton IMO. How much market share could they grab to recoup their 1/2 billion dollar investment in such a project? It probably doesn't pencil out for them so that's why they stick to the huge 1/2 ton market, mid size sedan market, small car market, etc.
Add to this the fact that diesel fuel is more expensive than gas and the fact that emission laws have killed the huge advantage in mpg, it's no mystery why we don't see them in 1/2 ton trucks. Finally, it will be an expensive option so that's another negative.
