Northstar campers

Another happy Northstar w/cassette toilet owner. I just got back from Montana where a vault toilet to dump a cassette is a lot easier to find than a dump station. The separate flushing water tank also means just about anything can go in there. I topped mine off midweek with the ice melt from the cooler.

I dumped my cassette at work on Monday morning, if I had forgotten and still had the camper on. Only one jerk asked me what was in the strange looking briefcase with little wheels in 4 and a half years.

It is certainly the case that a black tank can be more convenient IF there are dump stations nearby. Unfortunately, I can go to lots of towns and there are no dumps. Chances are that BLM land had at least an outhouse. That is all I need.

Last winter we sat out on the BLM land for 6 weeks every 2 weeks we went to town and dumped the black tank. I just can,t see were a cassette would work for us, it would be great if they would give you the option of a black tank on a large camper like that.

I had a classic black tank toilet in our first camper. It was a bit inconvenient at the end of a trip, as we needed to find a suitable dump station before parking the rig at home. With the cassette, we just pour it into our home toilet.

If you are doing many short trips and frequently move camp, it is very convenient and IMO the better alternative.
If you usually stay put in one place for some time, maybe even with full hookup, a cassette is probably not for you.

That SOG kit is a great idea.

Without any chemicals you can dump into any toilet with good conscience, regardless of the waste water treatment downstream.

My Northstar has a very simple cassette. No fans, no vents. A few tablespoons of chemicals designed for large black tanks works really well to control odors.

You pick your poison. With a cassette you need to dump every couple of days. With a black tank you are up the creek when there is no dump within miles and miles.

Typically the biggest logistics issue I face is trying to find fresh water, not trying to dump.

Another Northstar, another Cassette. Here in europe, fixed black water tanks are an exception - cassettes are the norm.

+ Dump almost anywhere
+ possibility to use the cassette without tank deodorant/chemicals, SOG* vent system
- 2 days capacity for 2 people
- no full hookup; you always need to dump and rinse the cassette
(actually, we dump more often, as an half-empty cassette is easier to carry and wheel around)

*the SOG is a small electric fan that connects to the tank vent via a hose and is activated when you flush. It works very well in keeping odours out of the bathroom. We used one in our previous Outfitter camper. Currently we just dump and rinse daily, that works well without chemistry.

We have the Northstar 12' STC with the cassette and are extremely happy with both. We visited Rex, the owner, at his factory in Iowa last year. Very impressed by construction methods, support, company philosophy, and most of the materials.

The cassette makes "dumping" easier with many more options. I have briefly thought about getting a backup cassette holding container for when we are away from any type of dump opportunity with 4 folks using the toilet...but they are kinda expensive.
