Oil Change While Traveling

What do you folks do about oil changes when traveling? I normally change my own oil, I don't really trust the lube places to do it properly. I'm planning a summer trip of at least 6000 miles and will need to do a change before getting home.

I install a Fumoto quick oil change valve on all my vehicles and that makes changing my engine oil very easy, and also reduces the chances of the oil drain plug threads in the oil pan getting stripped. lf you had one of these installed and are prepared to bring along a drain pan and filter wrench then changing your own oil when travelling would be very easy.

I have a Fumoto installed it makes changing the 15 quarts of oil a lot easier. I considered changing it on the road but would have to deal with the used oil.
  • This winter i will have right at 5000 miles to travel. I am gonna waste some oil and change it before I start and then when I get back.

If I had to do it on the road, I personally would go to a stealer.

I just cannot pass up that 17.95 oil change at the local stealer where i bought my F250.

Change it just before you go, and again when you get home. 6000 miles in one extended trip will not be a problem.

I hope you are not one of those oil waste'r that thinks you have to change it at 3K.

I wouldn't normally think twice about going 6000 miles on my oil. My concern is it will be nearly 100% towing miles and that concerns me a little. The manual says to do 3000 mile changes when towing.

  • When we made our trip to Alaska, stopped by a GM dealer and had them do it, they even washed the buggs off the TC for us and the bill was around (total) $40.00
  • A lot depends on the vehicle my last ford recommended oil change at 10,000 miles or once a year, my honda is between 5000 and 7500 the car tell me when to change, haven't had a vehicle for over 10 years that was less than 5000 miles. Like the idea of before and after your trip. smooth sailing
  • I agree with Me Again above and it's what we do. Fresh oil at the start of a long trip and change when we get home....especially if you are only going 6K.

  • I have used Mr. Lube exclusively for the last 20 years with never a problem. I think your worries are not necessary. I usually keep an eye on what they are doing as you stay in the truck.

Well with my Cummins, I would have 4,000 miles to spare!!

Two choices, either a dealer, or independent garage. Personally I would watch closely. If you use and independent garage you can supply the oil and filter and just pay them for the labor.

This is what I did when my daughter went to school out of state.
