Salesman rarely know details... they know how to sell and more specifically how to UPsell. The owner usually knows even less, he cares about bottom line money in versus money out.
Usually the fleet guy or the "truck guy" will be more in tune with your questions and either know the answers or know where to get the answers.
Personally, I don't like dealing with sales people. I used to work in sales in college and know that the pressure is on to make a commission, not actually help the customer. I can't stand that mentality, whish is why I never made too much money in sales.
I do the research before I even go look at a truck in person. I know every option they offer and what packages include what options. I then go to a dealership and look at trucks that have the options that I want. I know that I won't be purchasing, I am doing research. I make sure that I tell the salesperson up front that I will NOT be making a purchase today. After seeing the options in person and taking a test drive if necessary, I go back to my research. Once I know what I want and what I don't want, once I know what options weigh and how it will effect my payload, then I reach out to the salesmen that I met when I looked and I reach out to fleet/internet sales to price out a truck that I want.
The last new truck that I bought, I had all the details down and price agreed upon before I stepped foot in the dealership. I showed up to sign the papers and put down a refundable deposit. After the truck was in, I got a final price and brought in a check from my bank. Total time inside the dealership was less than an hour combined.
No nonsense from an uninformed salesman. No lies, no BS, no games. No going back and forth with the sales manager, etc. Easiest purchase I ever made.
