Passthrough Storage - Slide Out Drawer Mod

I've lurked here for a long time and finally decided to join, so I could share a few of the mods I've done recently.

I think the idea for this one came from a post I saw here. We wanted a better way to keep the front pass through storage area more organized and I have seen this kind of thing both as factory option on some rigs and as an mod. So I decided to make one. I figured it would eliminate a lot of space on the sides of the drawer, and under the drawer. It was a compromise we were willing to make for better organization. As it turns out what I thought would be "lost" areas are quite handy for certain items. On the sides of the drawer I keep my leveling boards, under the drawer I keep my back up jack & slide wrenches.

I used 3/4" pine of the drawer sides, 1/2" plywood for the drawer bottom, 2" casters for the rollers, and 2x4's for the drawer runners. The wheels carry the load and the runners keep it tracking straight and from tipping if extended out too far. I feel comfortable extending just a bit past half way and I can roll it out from either side.

After the first short camping trip, we love it already! I hope this gives others some inspiration to go for this mod!

  • So please refresh my memory - when is my appointment to have you come to my home to do this install?:B
  • Nice idea. What is the purpose of the treated lumber on the floor of the storage area for? (Located right by the wheels)

Also I take it the tab that is the the vertical wall that acts like the lip is glued onto the vertical board?
  • nice work. but for those of us unskilled laborers, what TT companies sell a unit with a similar plastic drawer that could be bought separately? I use 4 large lidded containers in my pass thru with ropes tied to the two in the center for access.

  • I like this idea! This may be hard to quantify, but perhaps you could estimate about how much weight you think the drawer can support - especially when it's fully extended. Thanks and nice job!
