IdaD, ShinerBock, see your point and appreciate the numbers.
Let me simplify my point.
How close is the axle to the frame (or rubber axle stop) when you load 4,000 lbs. of payload in a Ram 2500 diesel with a payload rating of 2,200 lbs?
How close is the axle to the frame (or rubber axle stop) when you load 4,000 lbs. of payload in a Ram 3500 diesel which has payload rating of 4,000 lbs?
If the "numbers" look good but the axle is riding on the frame, do you keep on driving?
I can't answer that since I have no need to put 4,000 lbs in the back of my truck nor do I see ever needing to in the future. Heck, I wouldn't even want to to tow something that big to need that much payload, and if I did then I would probably opt for a DRW anyways.
The most I have needed is about 2,700 lbs of tongue weight on a 14k trailer and my truck sits perfectly level and handles the weight very well.
Am I over my payload? Yes.
Do I think the truck is more than capable of handling it safely and without breaking? Most definitely.
Do I think the diesel 2500s can handle the same weight that the gas 2500 can handle? Yes, since they have the exact same rear suspension.
Do I think the 2500s rear suspension can handle the 4,000 lbs that a 3500 is rated for? No, but as I stated above, I would not want to tow something that requires that much payload in a SRW truck. That is just my preferences.
