I believe at some point on the Ram 3500 you get a slightly larger rear axle. The 2500 is listed as a 11.5" AAM, and the 3500 is listed as 11.8" AAM. I'm not sure how much that influences anything else though.
Both the 2500 and 3500 SRW are rated to tow 17,000 at max tow rating, even with different axles. I'm not sure it really matters if 3000 is in the bed and 14K is behind it, or 2000 is in the bed and 15K is behind it.
