Picked up new TT Wednesday

I made a 650 mile trip to the RV dealer Tuesday and picked up a new TT Wednesday morning and made the 650 mile trip back home, going to the dealer the truck was getting 19.5 MPG, however coming home I was battling 21 MPH head and crosswinds and the truck was getting 10 MPG, now for the part every one will ask
The TT is a Bullet 207RBS empty weight of 4030 with a Carrying Capacity of 2170 for a total of 6200
now comes the part that will elicit the most comments
The tow vehicle is a 2004 F150 , 4.6 , short wheel base 3.55 gears with the trailer tow package
the spread axle seems to do a real good job at eliminating trailer sway
  • I couldn't find a 307RBS listed. Sure that's the correct model?
Anyway, you might be a bit underpowered with the smaller V8 and 355 gears, but I wouldn't worry too much. 10MPG is all can be expected with any gas truck and trailer that size; the most I've ever got with my Chevy 5.3 is 11.5MPG. Make sure it has a good transmission cooler, and good WDH/sway bar... don't get in a hurry and just have fun. Congrats on the new purchase.

9-11 mpg is about normal for 1/2 ton towing. Consider yourself lucky if you get 11.
  • Once you load up the TT with 1200lbs of stuff and the TV with firewood and anything else laying around, you'll know soon enough how it tows. If it gets you there safely, it is what it is. Happy Camping!
  • I had the same set up. Dry 4310. Loaded close to 6k. I rarely got better than 10mpg. It screams up hills in 2nd at 50 mph. Rpms pushed 3500. That was not a fun set up. The 4.6 3.55 with that wheel base is only rated to pull 6500 lbs so your overdrive has to always be off.
  • Overdrive was on and it was not hunting , had no problem staying with the 3/4 tons that were pulling big 5 vers
  • Just enjoy it, Steve/Vicki. You won't win any races but camping and road trips aren't about being fast. If you can maintain 55-65MPH and get 10MPG average, then you're doing fine.

I did a 4500 mile trip a couple years ago in my '01 Silverado. Mine has a slightly larger motor, but I hauled more weight. Had a Gulfstream 22' trailer, bikes, bed full of firewood, fuel, generator, air compressor, tool boxes, dog kennels and dogs, Trailer was loaded with supplies for 2-3 weeks camping, plus full water tanks, propane tanks, etc. I averaged 10MPG and sometimes maintained 3000-4000 RPMS for miles at a time just to stay at 50 MPH. We had a blast on that trip, and never got in a hurry. This was in 2012 and the truck had 175k miles on it. I still drive it every day and it has 199xxx miles, and runs perfect.

Just keep your truck maintained, good fluids and lube, and make sure you're loaded level, and you'll be fine.
  • That's a perfect rig for that truck. You will be well under your numbers. I towed a slightly longer (29foot) and slightly heavier (5,500 pounds) over 8,000 miles ( and 8 months) around the country last year w/my 2011 Silverado Crew Cab 5.3. ZERO issues with the truck or trailer.

    Enjoy!

It'll pull it all day long, and your not breaking any safety laws. Instead of saying that set up was not fun, what I should have said was, my new 6.7 ltr superduty pulling my now 5500 dry TT is a lot MORE fun, but your fine. Again the truck was screaming in 2nd on hills but never showed signs of giving up. It's a strong engine with no issues. If you have the extended wheel base it's rated at 6900 lbs. I've read on F150 forums that that engine is built to withstand high RPMs for long periods of time. It's gets the most HP at the higher RPMs yet good mileage at the lower rpms. If you ever feel you need more torque you can inexpensively change your rear to a 3.73 or a 4.10. And you are correct with regards to the 5rs. My buddy's 350 is rated at 22000 and his 36 ft 5er toy hauler is pushing 18000 lbs loaded. My little 4.6 would keep up just fine. Anyaway enjoy it and have lots of fun.
  • X2 on the lucky to get 11 mpg.

I hauled two 5000# trailers, one with a 200 hp V6 and the other with a 356 hp EcoBoost. Both engines got 9 to 10 mpg. but it was all the 200 hp could do to get 65 mph on the flat and 55 mph on anything that resembled a hill.

I have not heard of too many gas engines getting more than about 10 mpg.
