Pickup shopping. 7,200 lb TT

Time to get another truck. Actually we haven't had the tundra since last year so we haven't been camping. Now I'm going to need the TT for Business purposes as well, along with fun. Going to be raking up the miles.

I've driven Toyota cats and tricks for twenty years, with virtually zero issues. I loved that tundra, but it was totaled, so here I am.
Tt:scaled at 7,200 lbs. Hitch weight of 812lbs. Length of 31feet. 2009 jayco eagle super light. 7,200 lbs is not super light, but ok.

Hensley hitch, so add some weight to the hitch.

I know a lot about Toyota, but I'm all ears. I've never pulled anything with more than a half ton.

Any suggestions?

  • If you liked the way the Tundra towed maybe get another one. All of the 1500 trucks will pull your trailer but you already know how the Tundra towed and if you liked it get another. If not then get either GM, Ford or Ram if you like them better. They should all pull the trailer get the one you like better. Might want to stay away from the ecoboost though as I have been ready things like only rated to 100,000 miles on the turbo and condensation problems with the intercooler.
  • That trailer can certainly be pulled by most 1500 series trucks but it's getting on the upper end. For a more enjoyable and easier towing experience I would look at 2500 series trucks. I realize that will exclude your favorite brand.
If you are going to be putting on 20,000 miles towing every year diesel might make sense. Otherwise, for occasional towing I think a gas engine would serve you well.
In my experience a Chevy or GMC would probably ride and handle more like your Toyota but that's all just opinion and personal preference. You'll need to drive them. That's the fun part anyway.
  • I've thought about diesel. Better gas mileage? Also, I'm seeing f250 xlt 4wd for around 38k. Brand new.
  • Don't know what your presonal preference is for gas vs diesel as gas powered will certainly handle a 7,200# TT. That TT is generically within the capability of any of the HD Tow Equiped 1/2 tons by the big 3 out there. Pick your favorite

However, since you will be "racking up the miles" in the interest of a lot of miles with as least stress as possible (plenty of capacity & power) I would suggest getting any of the later model 3/4 diesels. Personnally I would avoid the Ford 6.0 diesel but other than that any of the big 3, pick your favorite.
