Primus Vs. Prodigy

The Prodigy series can be mounted in any orientation from horizontal to vertical and upside down (not sure why). The Primus IQ instructions says: "WARNING The Brake Control must be mounted
from 0 degrees to 70 degrees nose up. (See Below).
In hilly terrain it is advisable to leave a margin at
either extent to keep bars from coming on when going
up and down hills."

The bars they talk about are indicators the controller is too high or too low. Mine is mounted at about 60 degrees up and never had a problem with it.

It was the IQ. The guy was selling it for a real good price and I needed to save some money for the sway bars.

What is the difference between the 360 and the 70 between the two.

I had the Primus and noticed when I was going down a steep hill it would cause my brakes to be a lot more sensitive when applying the brakes. I have sence moved up to the P-3 very happy with it.

When I got my trailer, I was originally set up by the dealer with a Voyager. I was never happy with it as it never was completely smooth at stops. I looked at the Primus IQ, P2, and P3. Confused I emailed Tekonsha. He verified the Voyager, as was the original Primus, were pendulum based. He also verified the workings of the Primus IQ, P2, and P3 are the same except the mounting restriction on the IQ and as you move from the IQ to the P2 and then to the P3 you get more information on the readouts and diagnostics. I went with the IQ and never looked back. It is set it and forget it. Head and shoulders, at least in my case, over the Voyager. It is very cost effective and works great unless you want more information. Personally, I just wanted it to work. Many people overlook the IQ because of bad information.

The do not make the old Primus any more. But they get resold a lot on Ebay for cheap. Also, I have seen som NOS Primus controls in mom and pop RV stores and auto parts stores.

They are a decent control.... Think a Tekonsha Envoy in a nicer package. FWIW the Voyager is a significantly better control than the original Primus.

FWIW I have the 90160 model Primus IQ. They didn't even have the non IQ at the RV store. Do the even still make the non IQ?

Either way, if the OP does a search on Primus, he will get this:

"PRIMUS IQ is a totally proportional electric trailer brake control. Primus utilizes the primary sensor technology from Tekonsha's high tech Prodigy brake control......."

I was not aware of previous versions. I should not have assumed he was looking at the latest models.

Here is where it gets confusing. The Primus and the Primus IQ are two compleatly different brake controls. The OP asked about the Primus which has more in common with a voyager than a Prodigy.

I have Primus IQ in my truck. Bought it about 2 months ago. The new Primus IQ is the same as the old P2 as I was told by the sales guy. No leveling necessary. It has 4 boost settings. Works fantastic. It's smooth and easy to adjust.
