Pros/Cons of an RV GPS System

We will be traveling to Alaska this summer and I'm considering buying one of the RV GPS systems such as the one from Magellan and am wondering if they are worth the cost. I have a gps system in our TV but it is limited in terms of being RV friendly. Does anyone own one of these RV gps systems and if so, do you recommend them and if so, which one would you recommend.

  • There is an app called backcountry it built by critters. I runs off satellite and does not require cell connection. You just need to pre load ares that you will be exploring. I use it all of the time foe snowmobiling . It has a tracking system and a ton of other great features. Only down side is I know the any android system work great with this app not sure about I phone. If it is compatible its a no brainer. I've used 1/2 dozeen of different gps systems and this is hands down the best by far. Also search YouTube for backcountry gps systems. Good luck.
  • I've been a Garmin user for years and they seem to offer a pretty good product. But they don't really have a product just for RVs. They have two trucker GPSs which allow specification of height/weight but then you get extra features that are not needed/wanted for an RV use.

I have an "automobile" Garmin in the RV and have been quite pleased with it. However, I run the 4-lane interstates where I have no worry about height and weight restrictions.
  • Yes, I do have an IPhone but there are a lot of areas where you don't get a connection so really don't want to have to rely on cell service for gps and other info. Sounds like some folks prefer the Rand McNally GPS instead of the Magelan. I've read reviews on both and it seems like a toss up as to which is better. Thoughts?

  • Do you have a smart phone/iPhone? Co-Pilot has an rv/truck setting for low bridges, etc. About $30 plus you get Google and the whole internet for finding stuff.
  • Rand McNally- it has cg, gas, rest areas, vets, pet friendly places all listed and you get to specify your length for directions.
